BIO:
R_Garcia (Randy Garcia), born April 20th, 1977 in Miami, FL, is a
modern electronic composer, producer and multi-instrumental performer.
Currently based in Atlanta, GA, Garcia heads the seminal Nophi
Recordings, as well as the annual Nophest Summer Music Festival. In
addition to his solo work, he composes and tours as part of the
critically acclaimed art-rock band, Nerd Parade.

Known primarily for his involvement in the genesis of the American IDM
(Intelligent Dance Music) movement, R_Garcia has long employed a punk
rock ethic in his musical endeavors, often eschewing traditional
industry practices in favor of a DIY philosophy.
NOPHI RECORDINGS
“In 1998, Nophi Recordings was founded by R_Garcia and Mic Mell.
Nophi’s focus would be instrumental and electronic music, relying
heavily on a handmade aesthetic and grass-roots promotion.
Nophi flourished through the 2000′sbefore finally undergoing an overhaul  in 2009 — when the label won Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta 2009  awards for “Best Record Label (Readers Choice).”

RECENT & CURRENT
Beginning in 2007, R.Garcia released an onslaught of both new and
previously unreleased material. Among those recordings are three of
Garcia’s most adventurous works: A Delicate Bashing, which introduced
his live band, Nerd Parade; The largely acoustic I Used to Write on
Walls
; and the Critically acclaimed LP of instrumental love songs,
Everything Ever. All three recordings heavily tied Garcia’s affinity
for live instrumentation to electronic production and set the stage
for the future of his music.

By 2010, R_Garcia had been invited to score a television commercial
for Kelloggs and work closely with Grammy Candidates 3KStatic on
Evolver, a unique sample and loop CD for Sony Creative Software. He
also produced recordings and remixes for Pearl Future, Kevin Max (of
DC Talk), Pop Will Eat Itself and Julie Slick (Adrian Belew). In April
of 2011, Garcia will release his next LP, Resurgens which features a
vocal-heavy approach, bolstered by the guest talents of NNXT, DiViNCi
(of S.O.S), Plusses and Ups, Tricil, Labtob and long-time collaborator
Threv.

[SUBV007] VA: Robohustlin

subVariant Robohustlin
{DOWNLOAD .ZIP}

subVariant’s latest free compilation, Robohustlin, is a curated collection of melodic IDM, ambient and glitch tracks from Chicago and beyond.

Chaircrusher’s “Crow Beat” and Milipede’s “30,000” take a somewhat dark, harder approach, while tracks like Diarmo’s “Details” and Matt Wolfe’s “4:09am” hover somewhere between hopefulness and melancholy, held together with intricate rhythmic programming. All thirteen tracks were chosen from an open call for songs in July-August of 2010, and represent the highest quality and most discernable sonic dedication that fit with the general theme that organically emerged over the course of weeding through all the submissions.

In keeping with subVariant’s tongue-in-cheek, music-as-consumer-product design aesthetic (see Subvaritrax, Exception AM), Robohustlin‘s digital cover lists the individual artists as separate “cures” in a packaging style based on the popular cough & cold medication, Robitussin.

1. Chaircrusher: “Crowbeat
2. Millipede: “30,000
3. Digital Gnosis: “Ruins
4. Redun: “Splt
5. Tapage & Stan Verberkt: “Modular
6. CitizenGreen: “Ob
7. Matt Wolfe: “4:09am
8. Michael Una: “Aleph
9. Elijah B Torn: “oooEight

Open Channel 3: Chicago Electronic Open Mic

Sort of like it’s analog cousin, Open Channel is an non-curated musician’s showcase in a supportive, relaxed environment, except it showcases electronic music, either through DJing or Live PAs. You will get 20 minutes to show off what you do musically, and then listen to other people doing the same thing.

There are 12 slots open. The first 12 people who RSVP and pay will be guaranteed a slot. Playing order will be determined on the date of the performance.

You are also absolutely welcome to bring friends, or just come as a spectator!

There is a suggested donation of $5.

TECH STUFF:

* You will be plugging in to an open channel on the mixer with one RCA cable from your gear. We will have 2 people set up on the table and then use the mixer to fade between people when they are ready to go, without dead air. Please try to stick to the 20 minute limit so everyone gets a chance to play.

* There are no monitors, but the room is not huge and the space is carpeted.

* Please note that there is not a lot of room at the front of house, so try to keep your gear footprint to the smallest you can manage (ie: there is no room to set up a full drum kit, so don’t bring it). The ideal setup would be a laptop plus one or two pieces of outboard gear / MIDI controllers.

* You will be plugging into a Beringer mixer so you will need to have L/R 1/4″ mono plugs out

Scroll to MULTIKULTI on the call box to get buzzed in and go up to the 4th floor. The space is an art + media collective and gallery. BYOB.

Text / call me personally at (312) 869-4647.

Please say OPEN CHANNEL at the buzzer or door so you can be directed to the right room. See you soon!
